as Theodosius (Egyptian) Obelisk, Serpentine Column, and
German Fountain.
Hagia Sophia was,
for nearly a thousand years, the largest enclosed space
in the world, and still seen as one of the world’s most
important architectural monuments. It is one of Turkey’s
most popular attractions, drawn by the sheer spectacle
of its size, architecture, mosaics and art.
Built in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian.
Blue Mosque:
This mosque was built by Sultan Ahmet I during 1609-1616
in the town carrying his name in Istanbul. It is the
only mosque in Turkey with six minarets. Due to its
magnificent hand-dyed blue, green and white tiles it has
been named the "Blue Mosque" by Europeans. The central
dome is 43 m in height and is 33.4 m in diameter. 260
windows surround the mosque.
Hippodrome: The ancient Hippodrome, scene of
chariot races and the centre of Byzantine civic life. Of
the ornaments which once decorated it, only three
remain: The Obelisk of Theodosius, the bronze Serpentine
Column, and the Column of Constantine.
Theodosius Obelisk
is originally an Egyptian piece of art erected in 1547
BC and originally 60m tall. German fountain is also
within the hippodrome area, constructed in Germany to
mark German Emperor Wilhelm II’s second visit to
Istanbul, it was imported and officially opened on
January 1 1901. The fountain’s three domes are decorated
with gold mosaics.
Grand
Bazaar: The oldest and biggest closed bazaar in the
world, also known as Kapali Carsi (Covered Bazaar) has
around 4000 shops and over 60 alleyways, covering a huge
labyrinth in the city centre. Apart from the usual shops
selling clothes, textiles, jewelry and carpets, there
are small workshops where craftsmen cast and beat silver
or brass, in a skilled trade handed down through the
generations.

Topkapi
Palace:
In fact only the palace is a subject of a single tour
with so much to be seen and to be told. A guided tour
is a must to really understand the meaning of the
Istanbul's most popular highlight. Briefly, Topkapi
Palace was the imperial residence of the Ottoman
Sultans, starting with Fatih Sultan Mehmet, the
conqueror, until 1856. It was converted to a museum in
1924. Parts of the Palace such as the Harem, Baghdad
Pavilion, Revan Pavilion, Sofa Pavilion, and the
Audience Chamber distinguish themselves with their
architectural assets, while in other sections artifacts
are displayed which reflect the palace life. The museum
also has collections from imperial treasury,
Chinese porcelain, weapons, calligraphy etc.
Suleymaniye Mosque: The cascading domes and four
slender minarets of the Imperial Suleymaniye Mosque
dominate the skyline on the Golden Horn's west bank. It
is considered the most beautiful of all imperial mosques
in Istanbul, it was built between 1550 and 1557 by Sinan,
the renowned chief architect of the Ottoman Empire's
golden age in the name of Sultan Suleiman The
Magnificent.
Rustem Pasa Mosque
The
Rustem Pasha Mosque was designed by Ottoman imperial
architect
Mimar Sinan for Grand Vizier Damat Rustem
Pasha The mosque is famous for its large quantities of
exquisite
Iznik tiles, set in a very wide variety of beautiful
floral and geometric designs, which cover not only the
façade of the porch but also the mihrab, minbar, walls,
columns and on the façade of the porch outside. These
tiles exhibit the use of a tomato-red color
characteristic of the early Iznik period (1555–1620),
and no other mosque in Istanbul makes such a lavish use
of these tiles
